Jc1973 (35) from United Kingdom, London, England, London + Barcelona
About me
Living in Barcelona right now but I spend a lot of time in London and will be back for three or four months after the summer. May go on to the Caribbean or come back to Spain after that. Everyone I used to know in London has moved elsewhere so it would be great to get to know some new people. A relationship of some kind would be nice too but who can plan for that? I write fiction but I have a day job to pay the rent (boring, I.T., but it does pay the rent) so I don't have a lot of time to run into new people - I suppose that's how I ended up here. When I'm not writing and not working I like to play hard - not necessarily partying but just making the most of this little lighting flash of time that we all get. I really don't know the kind of person or people I'm looking for. You have to create or consume art on some level. I hope you like the outdoors as much as the indoors. You have to be nice to my cat. Everything else is really open.

About me
- Where I liveWow. I really don't know where I live. Nowhere permanent. I'm in Barcelona at the moment which is alive and has a lot going on but gets overrun with tourists. I also spend a lot of time in London. I both love and hate it more the older I get, for the obvious reasons.
- Where are you originally from?A small island in Scotland.
- Do you want to stay there?I left a long time ago.
- What is your occupation?I'm trying to learn to write fiction. I program advanced web applications in the day time to pay the rent. That's almost as boring as it sounds, but not quite, because I get to work with some cool designers. The writing is as much fun as you can have on your own, and more than you can have with a lot of people.
- What have you done so far?Taught English (Poland, Italy, Mexico, Spain) Sold merchandising at rock concerts all over Europe. Worked as a programmer in Europe, the UK and the US.
- What are your future plans?I want to spend some time in the Caribbean and on the east coast of the US and Canada, with regular visits to London (maybe 9 months travelling and 3 in London, on a regular basis). I have short stories that I need to get published and a novel in its second draft that needs to be finished, then plans for several more. That and world domination.
- Your perfect partnerHow could you answer a question like this? Someone with the strength to love themselves and the tolerance to love me. Plus all the usual good stuff.
Stuff I like
- What are you interests/hobbies?Reading, Movies, Music, Art, History - all the usual cultural stuff but I hope without pretension. Travel. Manchester United. I love being in water. I like to swim and I want to try surfing and windsurfing.
- MusicMiddle of the road alternative: R.E.M., Radiohead, Bjork, Pink Floyd, some jazz, some classical especially Cello, especially Bach Cello. I love live gigs but I spent years working at them and I don't go so much now. I'd like to go to more classical and opera.
- Your fav tv seriesI don't watch a lot of TV. Football in the season and documentaries while I'm exercising. I loved Twin Peaks and Your Cheatin Heart back in the day. I am probably the only person on the planet who has never seen so much as five minutes of the Sopranos. Oh, and of course I love the Simpsons. Who doesn't?
- Your fav books/authorsUm. This could take some time. It's not at all important to me what a partner reads, but it is nice to read the same thing and compare notes. I guess I like books that make the attempt to be art. Some influences are Hemingway (the writer, not the man), Martin Amis (ditto), Don Delillo, Ian McEwan, Toni Morisson, Bret Easton Ellis, Philip Roth, Cormac McCarthy, Paul Auster... I really could go on all day.
- What sort of movies do you like? The arty edge of mainstream (starting to see a pattern here?). Coppola, Scorcese, Fellini, Antonioni, Jarmusch, Richard Linklater. I like auteur filmmakers. I don't see enough good films by women directors.
- Types of people you like?Anyone who is honest enough to show how stunning they really are. And, really, we all are.
- What kind of people do you find attractive?
- FoodI love to cook but in the maelstrom of writing and working and exercising it's the thing that tends to get squeezed out. I love simple, elegant cooking. Good Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Mediterranean. When I eat out it's often because I've been writing until I've missed a meal and am starving so I want basic cafe food. Happily, eating out informally in Barcelona is great. I actually love smart dining but don't get the chance to do it much.
- DrinksI used to be quite interested in wine, but again that's sort of gone by the wayside. I always have a drink with dinner. I can't remember the last time I was drunk.
- HolidaysI live and work in fantastic places. I don't take straightforward holidays much. Ever day is part holiday, part work.
- PetsI have a cat. In another life I wouldn't end up with him because he makes it harder to travel but I love him to bits and spoil him terribly. I like clean, non-yappy dogs. Huskies are amazing. I like animals with personality* so fish and rabbits and the like don't interest me. *I know, I'm projecting.
- Fav thingI don't really value things. That sounds so arsey but it's true.
- Fav Place
- What's your favourite radio station ?
- What's your favourite tv station ?
- What's your favourite drink?Wine, mostly red. Interesting beer. I'm addicted to sparkling water at the moment but that's just a phase.
- What's your favourite food?
- What are your favourite activities?I like hiking. I love swimming in the sea. I like to read. I love my work, I love writing. My best days around Barcelona I get to do a bit of all of these. I love travelling, the slower the better. The only thing better than all day on a train with a book and a notepad and a bottle of red wine is all of that with a companion, and the only thing better than that is an overnight train journey, a private sleeping compartment, dinner with the world rolling by.
My attitude
- Family lifeNot ready for kids yet.
- Jobs&WorkingMy writing is very important to me. I don't consider it a job. It's just a function of being. My day job not at all, but I do enjoy it and it allows me a very free and interesting life, so I try not to be a brat about the time it takes up.
- MoneyI was poor for a long time and so many people (family, friend, strangers) helped me out. I don't want to go back there and I don't want to impose on people again and to that degree money is important. I tend to set myself targets and work like a fiend until I've met them, then relax and pay attention to other things. I think I'm good at knowing when to stop and smell the roses.
